Taganrog is an old Asov sea port - one of the
South Russia ports. It was founded by Peter the Great in 1698 as a seaport
near the mouth of the
Don River
. Due to the port,

had a lot of links with Mediterranean countries:

.
Taganrog
is an industrial city, there are lots of enterprises
there. At the same time

is a green city. Every summer it becomes the resort for many people, especially
for young ones. It is quite big, with a population of about 350 thousand people.

is famous as a motherland of great Russian writer -
Anton Chekhov, who was born in 1860. Even now you can visit the house where
Chekhov was born and the house where in 1869 Chekhov family moved to, Literatory
museum after Checkov and so on. 
There are a lot of historical places and monuments
around the city: the monument to Peter the Great, to Alexander I. The monument
to Peter the Great was created by a well-known Russian sculptor Antokolsky. The
monument is situated on the shore of the
Azov
Sea
.
Taganrog
is a cultural center. There are three Institutions for
Higher Education, seven colleges, thirty eight secondary schools, four museums,
a theatre, an
Art
Gallery
, many libraries and cinemas. In 2002 Taganrog Drama Theatre after Checkov
celebrated its 175-th anniversary. It was awarded with the State Order.
